Here’s what I learned in the process:
• Recommended defaults – reduce decision-making and help users get started quickly.
• Give users control – let them choose what they actually want to receive.
• Defer the decision – sometimes the best choice is to introduce notifications later, once users understand the product’s value.
There isn’t one perfect pattern. The right approach depends on the user, context, and moment.
Good UX isn’t always about adding more choices. Sometimes, it’s about knowing when to give control, when to guide, and when to simply get out of the way.
